Planting vegetables can be relaxing and enjoyable and it’s constantly rewarding to harvest the fruits of your own effort. It may appear easy enough – you dig a hole and sow a seed or dig a small channel and scatter the seeds – but there are a few things you will need to know if you want to produce a solid first harvest.
Planting veg can be relaxing and fun and it is always satisfying to be able to pick the fruits of your own effort. It may appear easy enough – you dig a hole and plant a seedling or dig a shallow furrow and scatter the seeds – but there are a a small number of things you will want to know if you want to have an abundant initial harvest.
Keep It Small – Most first time gardeners don’t take yield into consideration when they’re preparing their first plot. When growing veg you’re going to grow much more than one tomato and/or 1 marrow or 1 handful of beans per plant. You might get a dozen or more tomatoes for each tomato plant in your patch. Who is going to eat all those tomatoes? Do you have neighbours and family who will be glad to take the surfeit from you? Before you get going, think about the likely yield of each plant you sow so you don’t over produce food that you will have no use for.
Sketch Your Design – When planting vegetables it’s critical to take into account that particular plants grow upwards and tall, like maize, whilst others spread out, like zucchini. You need to allocate plenty of room for the vine plants to spread out and you do not want your tall plants producing a shadow over your entire garden. Map your garden before raising your veggies to ensure there’s enough space for everything to grow correctly.
Experiment With Something New – Your first inclination when raising vegetables will probably be to grow things that you already know you like to eat. But, in addition, why not try planting something new and interesting, besides. For instance, if you already know you like cherry tomatoes try cultivating some heirloom ones also. Go ahead and grow carrots but perhaps sow some garlic, too. It is always enjoyable to try new vegetables, particularly if you grew them yourself.
You’ll find there is a lot of work involved when you grow a vegetable garden so you must be prepared for some work. You have to prepare the earth to start with and after that you will need to look after the garden each day – pulling out weeds, thinning out baby plants, making sure it has enough water. You will have something to handle virtually every day of the week during the growing season so make certain you’re ready to persevere.
