Watching bonsai grow and shaping them into beautiful living works of art is a fascinating and very rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai trees is not an expensive pastime with few specialist tools required, but a magnificant bonsai can be more of a statement in your home than many an expensive ornament. A bonsai tree is a true living sculpture.
Bonsai are pot planted trees that are developed to be miniatures of the full sized tree. Bonsai trees are grown from almost any perennial woody stemmed trees or shrubs that grow branches and can grow small through pot confinement with the aid from crown and root pruning.
A Bonsai tree can be grown from seeds, young shoots taken from the wild, (please have regard for any local laws regarding taking wild plants or trees in your region), or can be purchased as mature planted bonsai. Obviously growing bonsai from seed is the slowest route, but you do have total control over how your bonsai tree will grow.
Bonsai trees are planted in containers that not only contain root development, but are also designed to further enhance the beauty of your bonsai tree. Special soils are available that provide the ideal environment for your bonsai tree to grow in.
Many methods are used to shape and give character to your bonsai tree including trimming leaves, wiring branches, grafting, dwarfing and deadwood, (a method of aging bark). Only a few special tools are required to shape bonsai, and these are readily available for little cost. Everything you need to get started can be easily purchased from a specialist bonsai nursery.
Bonsai trees can be had as indoor and outdoor varieties, and some bonsai are improved if left outdoors in the summer months and grown inside in the winter months.
And for anyone that likes the idea, but doesn’t want to keep bonsai, you can purchase artificial bonsai.
